'A Million Little Pieces

Posted by Ryan Woods

I just finished a most interesting book. You may have heard of it, Oprah's been raving about it for some time. And you know how the adage goes, "if Opraha's talking about it, who isn't?" Although I'm not much for adages, and although I'm not much for Oprah (hard to tell being that she's graced two blogs in a row), I think they're both right when it comes to this book.

It only took me eight days to read it, pretty impressive considering that regarding reading I have the attention span of a rowdy seven year old who just lost his parents in a freak gasoline fight accident. And even more impressive is that when I finished reading Million Pieces I found myself somewhat winded, though 'winded' is not the exact right word to describe it. I couldn't stop thinking about the book all day. At some points throughout the day I found myself literally grimacing because of some of the terrible things that happened. At other points I found myself smiling, thinking about some of the amazing events that occurred in the authors life...

Ok, I digress...the book is the story of James Frey, the author, and his six weeks in drug rehab. I can honestly say that he was the most screwed up living person I've ever read about...but then again I'm a sheltered homeschooled Christian boy who only learned of the Holocaust two weeks ago. I heard it from an old blind man down at Saturday Market, and I would not have believed him had it not been for the stares I received from those around me when I yelled "what's that ol' man? Jews? Holo-what? What's next, are you going to claim that Indians are from outer space!" To this day those stares haunt me.

Where was I? My sweet little homeschooled mind has now been indoctrinated with a fresh understanding of ###, Meth, Crack, Cocaine, Glue sniffing, Speed, pill popping, and I'm sure a few other sweet hook ups. Did you know that Crack was just Cocaine that had been melted down, mixed with Crest brand toothpaste, put into small bunt pans, frozen, and then smoked in cherry colored pipes? That one was learned not from the book but from that same old man at Saturday Market who just happened to be holding a cherry colored pipe...hmmm...
Read the book, it further enforces my idea that the F-bomb is the single most versatile word in the english language, it will tug at your heart, make you think, and quite often make you want to throw up.

Here is a thought from Mr. Frey. He believes that virtually everyone is an addict. Those who are in recovery from an alcohol addiction then become addicted to their AA meetings and then 12 steps. They simply replace one addiction with another. People look down on addicts, but they themselves are addicted stuffing their faces, watching TV, or being with people. It is all an attempt to get rid of that feeling inside of you. For him it was an inner rage that had to be fed. For others it might be an inner loneliness. For still others it may be something else. Whatever the case we're all addicts, we've all got problems to fix, and we'd all rather fix your problems than mine...interesting huh?

Well, lets open up the door to honesty and frankness. I'm going to start. I'm addicted to blogging. There I said it! Does this mean that I need to go to BA meetings? 'Cause if so, I am total down with that. "My names Ryan and I'm a BA."

Very good book report, Ryan. For this you receive an A + + + + + + and perhaps a Red Rider BB Gun. (I'm bored and sick and can't do much else but submit creepy/ stupid comments on people's blogs...)

I heard on the radio this morning that over 47 million people are on MySpace. There must be millions more on blogspot, xanga, and all the countless others. What I'm trying to say is, if you need to be codependant, the resources are out there.

I hear that your little "Million Pieces" book is not only a fake, but also a fraud and a falacy... how do you think this makes us feel?
