Dirty Jesus

Posted by Ryan Woods

Here's a song we've just started singing at Renovatus. It's quite different and strange and yet I find it appealing. Read the words and tell me what you think:
I will sing a song to you
And you will shake the ground for me
And the birds and bees and old fruit trees
Will spit out songs like gushing streams

And Jesus will come through the ground so dirty
With worms in his hair and a hand so sturdy
To call us his magic we call him worthy
Jesus came up through the ground do dirty

I will sing a song for to you
And you will stomp your feet for me
And the bears and bees and banana trees
Will play kazoos and tambourines

And Jesus will dance while we drink his wine
With soldiers and thieves and a sword in his side
And we will be joy and we will be right
Jesus will dance while we drink his wine

Jesus will come through the ground so dirty
With worms in his hair and a hand so sturdy
To call us his magic we call him worthy
Jesus came up through the ground so dirty

no offense, but it sounds like when I write poetry and there's that one line that you can't get right so you leave it until the end and come back and fix it.....maybe they just forgot to fix it?! Just a thought.

I need a little background on this one before I make up my mind about what I think. Did someone from your church right this song? Where did it come from? My first instinct is that I would not be able to sing it with a staight face. "With worms in his hair..." "banana trees, kazoos and tambourines..."? But then I think it's not really intended to be funny? I'm totally confused!

i have to tell you.... when you guys started singing this, I just about pooped my pants. The only thing that kept me from doing so was Matt. If he weren't there beside me, I would certainly have pooped at the thought o sweet baby jebus dancing with worms in his hair.

dude needs some basic hi-gene skills.... I'm just saying......

baby jebus, not matt.

Go to itunes and listen to a clip. I think it's written by a band called Page France. The tune of the song itself helps get you past the lyrics a little in that it's a great sound. The first time we sang it Matt prefaced it by giving it an artistic twist as well as explaining his understanding of its message.
I'm not sure, though, if a preface needs to be given every time or not.
Arwen, do you think that by the end of the song it was still poop-your-pants weird?

I didn't realize that I was logged in under R1's name...opps. That last comment was moi.

i heart page france.

my friend laura gibson opened for them at the doug fir when they were here back in march.

and that song gets me every time. it is AWESOME

I love that song! It's a really fun tune and I think the lyrics are awesome - you gotta think: if someone rose from the dead, they would probably have some worms in his hair.
