The Worst Surprise Party

Posted by Ryan Woods

Coolest game ever: Bibleopoly!!!
I found it on sale in a christian magazine last week. It's only 19.99. Thats a steal if you ask me. Here's what they say about it:

Monopoly's enjoyable, but the unadulterated greed doesn't help you practice what
you preach. Now instead of buying hotels, you build churches, draw
"faith/contingency" and "abyss" cards, and even lose a turn by landing on "Go
Meditate"! Eternal fun and challenge for all ages 8 and up.

Bibleopoly is only slightly better than Dance Praise, the sister game to Dance Dance Revolution. Sometimes I can't help but agree with the world by wondering how Christians can be strange and in their own little world. We seems so dense don't we? Just a little ridiculous at the least? I love Christ. I love Christians. But when you can go to a "Christians only" store and buy Testamints (a small mint wrapped in a package with a scripture on it) you've got to think that this isn't what Paul, Peter, or even Jesus had in mind for the salt of the earth. If it's all a joke, if Bibleopoly is all tongue in cheek and such, then I think I like it. Thats a good joke. It's so ridiculous that it makes me laugh...but if it's serious...which I think it is...God help us.

No seriously, God, please help us. Teach those of us who claim to follow you as leader, savior, and friend to live lives that reflect the life, hope, peace, and purpose that comes from relationship with you. May the world look at us and see sincere screw ups, messed up people who've found the greatest secret in the world and aren't good at keeping secrets. In years past I've been good at making it a surprise party, acting as though what I believed about life, death, and everything in between was something only to be whispered on Sundays to those who were "in" on the surprise. I'm good at keeping secrets.

The problem is not with the church. It's not with the Testamints and bible bookmarks, though I do detest what those things represent in my mind. No, the problem has always been with me. There is one person I can change...or rather, there is one person that I can submit to the Lord...

That reminds me of Noah's Ark 3D! I found that old classic buried in a box the other day. Looks just like the old Wolfenstein 3D except instead of shooting Nazis with a machine gun, you use a slingshot to shoot seed at llamas and goats that have gotten loose. The seed makes them fall asleep which is genius!

if anyone wants to throw up, i suggest you click on the little tiny "me" at the end of that blog...sick sick sick.

Did we play that game in Portugal? It sounds very familiar to me...I love killing Nazis and putting sheep to sleep...good times.

I'm pretty sure...nope, positive...that I will be having nightmares about that picture. Gross! And really scary! (Why are those the words that can always describe a picture of you?)

I especially like the subtlties of the photo: the extra nipple on me's stomach, and the tube of toothpast in the armpit.

But seriously ...

I think the Enemy has replace the Reign of Christ in the hearts of Jesus-followers with a Reign of Terror. That is, FEAR rules the behavior of SO many Christians, so we end up replacing true obedience with artificial obedience that LOOKS good, but keeps us below the Enemy's radar:
* We use jargon & lingo that makes the "world" feel like an outsider.
* We have our own stores, coffee houses, music industry, story tellers, radio & TV stations.
* We engage in "deep" conversations about end times, or wealth & health, or theological systems, etc. Lots of intelectual things that mean little or nothing to my neighbors.
* We answer questions that nobody but us is asking.
* We are afraid that we're really not that different from "worldly" people so we insulate ourselves with artificial markers that make us FEEL better about ourselves.

And do you know what I think that translates into? WAY too many Christians are not convinced that the Good News is actually good. We are unsure that His message is actually relevant.

But a new breeze is blowing, my friends! Or perhaps it's a very ancient breeze! It's a wonderful time to be alive! We may all live to see God do some amazing things!

DON'T YOU EVER POST A PICTURE LIKE THAT AGAIN RYAN WOODS! NEVER! NEVER NEVER NEVER!

ooh, but wait... that was, indeed, the worst surprise party I've ever been involved in! Good show!

I try very hard to blend humor and serious matters into one blog site (sometimes even into one blog post). Often it may take away from the "message" of that post, but thats not really my point. I think that people can be funny and deeply spiritual at the same time. Anyway, you have my word that I'll never post that picture again.

i find that to be one of your best traits, Riz... it keeps heavy conversations from getting out of control. to me, it says "it matters, but there are other things... don't get your panties in a wad"

this is really terrible, but I don't have time to read your blog.....but I did look at the heading and it said something about surprise parties and I was just reminiscing (spelling?) about the surprise birthday party/christmas morning you and Jess did for me last year. It was the BEST birthday ever....including the naked man at the front door.....Matt. Thanks again.

Not sure where to post this but I wanted to ask if anyone has heard of National Clicks?

Can someone help me find it?

Overheard some co-workers talking about it all week but didn't have time to ask so I thought I would post it here to see if someone could help me out.

Seems to be getting alot of buzz right now.

Thanks
